About Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City is the capital and largest city of Oklahoma and is located in the central part of the state. In addition to being bisected by the Oklahoma River, the city contains three sizable lakes, the Hefner, the Stanley Draper and the Overholser. The city was established in 1889 by thousands of homesteaders who migrated to the area. Many of the city’s corporations and employers are involved in the energy, information technology and health services fields.
The city contains numerous historical sites of interest including the Oklahoma City National Monument, dedicated to the people who lost their lives in the 1995 bombings of the Federal Building, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, dedicated to the education and continued interest of the American Western legacy. The museum contains exhibits commemorating individuals displaying exceptional rodeo performance, American Western art and Native American art. The facility houses over 10,000 pieces of artwork, sculptures and artifacts.
Oklahoma City has numerous galleries and museums in addition to botanical gardens. The city’s three lakes and river make it a popular destination for water recreational activities. White Water Bay, Frontier City, and the local zoo are only a few of the venues that provide family fun and entertainment.
